Summary

Giola, on the island of Thassos, is one of those places you want to see in person the moment you come across a photo of it. Located on the southern side of the island, near Astrida, seawater collects in a natural rock hollow. The Aegean Sea stretches out before it, separated only by a narrow strip of rock—a feature that gives the landscape an almost designed, artistic quality. Also known as the “Tear of Aphrodite,” this natural pool on Thassos is steeped in a beautiful legend: it is said that Zeus created it so the goddess could bathe there.

The sight itself easily explains how such stories came to be. The green hues of the water, the curves of the rocks, and the deep blue of the open sea create a setting that deserves to be admired at a leisurely pace.

Reaching Giola involves some walking. After leaving your car in the parking area, you follow a path down to the coast. The time it takes depends on where you park and your walking pace, so be sure to allow enough time for the return journey as well. Wear shoes with good grip and bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. The journey is more enjoyable when you are prepared for the sun and the rugged terrain.

Giola attracts many visitors during July and August. If you wish to photograph it with fewer crowds or avoid the intense midday heat, plan your visit for early morning. May, June, and September also offer opportunities for a quieter exploration, weather permitting.

You will be moving across rocky terrain around the natural pool, and entering or exiting the water requires caution. Before deciding to swim, observe the conditions and identify a safe exit point. Avoid jumping from heights, and keep in mind that the site’s terrain makes visiting with small children difficult.

Even if you stay out of the water, a stop here is worthwhile. View Giola from different angles and watch how its color shifts with the changing light. Take a moment between photos to simply gaze at the sea. That simple moment—with the sun-warmed rock beneath you and the open sea stretching out before you—might well become your favorite memory of the trip.
